Tailor-made website design for mountain chalets and accommodation

But where do the chalets come from?

With no less than 342 ski resortsFrance has the largest ski area in the world. When you're skiing with family or friends, there's nothing better than staying in a chalet. The year 2021 skidata.io has ranked the best ski resorts in France out of the 232 still in operation. One of the 7 ranking criteria is the charm of the resort, and in particular the presence of athentic chalets.

In the past, the chalet was used by farmers to store equipment or food in the mountains, and in winter it was sometimes used as a second home. It was in 1761 that the first English tourists discovered the chalet. Their rustic appearance and cosy, welcoming atmosphere were a hit. Since then, many have been built in Europe, and today the chalet is a top-of-the-range accommodation aimed at a wealthy clientele. Made of wood or stone, their charm leaves no one indifferent. Some people are even prepared to spend a fortune to become the owner of a chalet. These cosy accommodations are proving extremely popular in France.

More modern than in the past, the materials used for rustic chalets remain the same. However, since the 90s we've seen the emergence of new, cheaper mountain accommodation in concrete.

What are the different types of chalets?

Depending on the region, the year of construction or the impact of different architectural cultures over time, the chalet has evolved. So they can be found in different forms, in different places and for different uses.

Wooden chalets :

The stacked solid wood chaletIt is the most rustic, the oldest and the most imposing. It is made of oak logs. The proportions of this construction are regularly imposing.

The post and beam wooden chaletHere, logs are a thing of the past. Based on the same construction technique, wooden planks are positioned horizontally and vertically. But the craftsmanship and materials remain traditional.

The timber-framed chaletThis is based on a technique borrowed from traditional Breton houses, which can also be found in Germany. A wooden structure, stone walls and floors and the typical half-timbered grid pattern visible on the outside.

The timber-framed chaletThis is simply a wooden construction in which the ceiling acts as a floor for the floor above. It is modular and can even be bought in kit form.

Why rent out your chalet?

Living in the mountains and breathing in the fresh air for a few days a year is the dream of many city dwellers. Winter holidays are the most expensive, and the clientele is well-to-do. For someone who has a chalet in the mountains, the opportunity is there for the taking. In February 2022, the occupancy rate in ski resorts was 82% and has been rising steadily since the post-covid period. With demand outstripping supply, prices are rising fast and your property is becoming a major source of seasonal income.

According to skidataio, a study of prices of French ski resorts shows that renting accommodation for a week costs an average of €479 for two adults. Over a 5-month season, this works out at €9580.
